About The Shed

​We are a facility dedicated to being the ultimate musician's paradise. We feature full service custom drum orders, one on one music lessons, practice space rentals, and recording sessions. We aim to influence, encourage, motivate positive assumption and generalization that will give inspiration to artist and the way they see the world of music.

Clarence Powell, II

Founder and Owner

​

Clarence is the founding owner of The Shed Drum Shop. A Charlotte native and percussion whiz, Clarence attended Harding University High School where he was captain of the snare line, the youngest member of the Charlotte Bobcats drumline, and was drumline captain of Drill of Hope drumline, a city drug and alcohol prevention initiative. Clarence went on to attend Winston-Salem State University where he was drumline captain for the Red Sea of Sound Marching Band for 4 years and a member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity. Wanting to give back to his community, after graduating, Clarence aspired to offer a space in Charlotte where all can learn, enjoy, and show appreciation for a variety of music genres and percussion instrumentation, hence, The Shed. Clarence is passionate about music education and community building through the arts and is always looking forward to collaborating with musicians having similar interests.

Kendrick “Retro” Houser

Store Manager and Studio Engineer

Retro is The Shed’s store manager and studio engineer. Retro came to Charlotte by way of Columbia, SC and his love of music started in grade school where he joined the orchestra as a bass player. He then went on to become his high school's drum major where he found his passion for music production and performing arts. Since starting a career in the music industry, Retro has worked with many local artists, producing several projects along the way. His main focus is bringing unity within the Carolina music and art culture by providing education, development, resources, and networking opportunities.

Alexandria Miles

Client Relations Coordinator

Alex is our Client Relations Coordinator. Coming to North Carolina from Petersburg, Virginia, she has experience with auxiliary and marching percussion instruments. She was a member of H2O, Winston-Salem State University’s Red Sea of Sound drumline, where she played bass drum for 4 years. She is a member of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority and actively participates in marching band alumni activities that support current H2O drumline members. When not working at The Shed, Alex enjoys traveling abroad and spending time with family, friends, and her dog.

Franklin Haigler

Drum Instructor

Franklin is our drum instructor at The Shed offering snare drum and drum set lessons. Franklin attended South Carolina State University where he played snare drum for the notorious Marching 101. In addition to providing private lessons, Franklin is a part of Intensity, a seven-piece band that delivers a power-packed, fully choreographed show guaranteed to entertain. He is also a part of Back to the Future Show Band, a band created while in college that continues to perform and create hits to this day. Lastly, you can find Franklin on drumset every Sunday at Plaza United Methodist Church right here in Charlotte.
